Are you writing on Medium but not getting any traffic and visitors? Maybe you are not doing the basics of Medium profile optimization.
A perfectly-looking Medium profile can easily boost your traffic and increase your visitors once you take it seriously. Do you think people are just looking for your content? They also check your profile and trust me; it creates an authority over whether they will visit your blog.
So, how can you optimize your Medium profile?
Use a strong profile picture
Stop using those random images from the internet.
We are not now writing during the 90s, people are now looking on your profile, and it defines how professional you are. Having a good profile picture can give your readers a positive impression about you – you already built an authority with them.
When choosing a profile picture, make sure that it is a high-quality picture and professional-looking. If possible, you can also use a smiling picture so you can have a “friendly look” with your audience.
Some people are also using a profile picture generator to edit their profiles and make their pictures more professional-looking by changing their backgrounds to plain backgrounds.

Write a compelling bio
Having a compelling bio can easily build you an authority on the platform. This is a short description of yourself showing your passion and stories that you can share to your audience.
When I read a story on Medium or in any blog, I always check the bio of the author. This will give me an idea of who the heck is the one writing this blog and if the author is reliable or just a regular person farming on getting attention from others – or maybe he/she is just an amazing writer who writes the best piece but doesn’t have any experience; this is possible if a writer is dedicated to pursuing blogging as their career.
How to Write a Compelling Bio
When writing your bio, you should do the following to get more attention of your readers, make your profile a reliable source, and build authority:
- Keep it short. You don’t have to exaggerate your bio. If you have 10 years of experience in writing, just write “having 10 years of writing in [your_niche]”. Nothing more, nothing less. No need to write how did you became a writer 10 years ago, you can add it to your “About” page later.
- Share your niche. You can always add your niche on your bio. This will give an overview to the readers of who you are and what do you write. It will also give them an idea if they should follow you if they have the same interest and niche as yours.
- Share your hobbies. Bio shouldn’t be always professional. You can also add your hobbies to connect more with your readers. Just like your niche, readers can see if they will follow you depending on your interest. For example, if someone put “I love anime” on their bio, other anime lovers can follow that author especially if they share anime content on their profile.
- Put a call-to-action. CTA is not necessary, but you can always add it to your bio and get more supporters through your profile. In my case, I add my email to my bio so people can always connect with my whether it is business-related or just want to connect with me in a friendly or professional approach.
Not to mention, you can always optimize your bio based on the keywords and niche that you are writing. Sharing your niche, interest, and hobbies will support this one because when you share your interests and someone search for it, there is a potential that your profile will appear on the search engine and get more readers from it.
Categorize your stories
Make sure to categorize your stories to sort out the content that you are sharing. It is always important to identify what is your blog all about and how do you organize your content.
In my case, this is one of the mistakes that I did through my blogging journey. I focused on writing any content based on my interest – which is a lot – and never grow my blog. This time, I am focusing on one niche and I will be uploading more blogs about the niche that I am trying to rank up for Google.
Use tags effectively
Tags are important to connect with other writers with the same interest plus you can have a potential rank up on your blog. When writing on Medium, you can always use tags to “put your story” out there and reach your target audience.
You should always add a tag that is related to your blog. This will lessen the confusion of your readers when they searched for the tag and then find your content. For example, if you put a tag “writing” on your blog but your content isn’t really all about writing – or doesn’t even relate to it, it can backfire your account because it will make you look like a writer that is drawing attention from your readers.
Delete and update your blogs
As a writer, you should always update your content. If you realize that you made a mistake from the past, sharing a content that doesn’t satisfy you nor your readers, you should update it – I won’t really recommend to delete your content, just update it because it still has the potential as an evergreen content.
However, if you feel that your content is irrelevant to your current niche and you don’t want to confuse your readers, you can delete it anyway and restart.
Engage with the community
When I join in any other community, I always have one rule that I always follow: engage in the community. This helps me to connect with other users and build my “social currency”.
It is always best to engage other readers and build your reputation, start getting their attention by showing up on their comments every time they publish something. This is a proven strategy on my part especially if you are a beginner and you completely have no friends on the platform.
To keep the engagement up, I always add a question on my comment and make it an open-ended comment or reply, this will force the other party to respond and start building a relationship with them.
Optimize your profile for search engine
SEO is not dead.
People who say that it is dead might be just unfortunate in ranking on Google. I have a few blogs ranking on Google and I would say that it is still because of SEO.

On Medium, they have their own way for your blog to rank on Google but as a writer, even Medium has their own mechanism to handle it, it is still important to know the basics of SEO and start optimizing your profile and content with SEO.
This will help you to get organic traffic from Google – and it is also a good way if you haven’t yet built your reputation and community in the platform.
To sum up, building your Medium profile is just easy if you are dedicated to stand out from the crowd. You don’t have to overthink it, what you need is to keep your profile up to date and make it more professional to become a credible and reliable writer.
